On the occasion of World Animal Day, October 4, 2008, the Animal Protection Project in Syria (SPANA) designated the kunga as Syrian Animal of the Year. The kunga (see page 3) is the donkey-onager hybrid whose remains have been identified in the elite mortuary complex of Early Bronze Age Umm el-Marra.
